Public safety is a priority. Quality of life for all our citizens is only possible if they feel safe in their communities and moving about in our city. Safety and security are also crucial for development as they create a climate conducive to economic activity. The objective of public safety is to reduce crime, protect people and their property, and ultimately provide a safe and secure environment.

Since becoming Mayor, I established a Public Safety Committee. The committee members consist of the Mayor, commonwealth’s attorney, fire chief, police chief, two council members, school superintendent, city attorney, WTRJ superintendent, and the city manager. The mission of this committee is to “strive to strengthen working relationships between city agencies, promote community engagement, and develop strategies to improve the safety of the city’s communities and neighborhoods while serving as a formal channel of communication between city government and our citizens.”

A Public Safety Committee portal was created on the city website. It provides citizens with a means to offer suggestions and notify public safety partners of needs and concerns within their communities.

During my current mayoral term, public safety funding has risen from $65,282,430.00 to $98,313,364.00. This equates to a 46% increase and represents 31% of the operating budget.

LAW ENFORCEMENT

It is paramount that we provide law enforcement with the assets, resources, and support to accomplish their mission to “provide law enforcement excellence and public service through partnership with our community.”

I pledge to continue to supply the means and incentives to “retain and recruit diverse personnel that is well informed, service-oriented, and embrace the ideals of integrity and honor.”

FIRE & RESCUE

Our fire and rescue personnel are exemplary. As our city continues to grow, we must ensure adequate facilities and staffing are provided to deliver professional services with an acceptable response time.

Continued training and ample equipment are indispensable to guarantee emergency services. I will continue to support adequate funding for compensation and materiel.
